Bunker RenovationSGM’s monthly turf maintenance diaries offer a simple checklist of standard seasonal tasks that should be undertaken on any particular month for specific surfaces and sports. Our diaries include seasonal advice for golf course, bowling green and football pitch turf maintenance.

The following checklists outline the main tasks for turf maintenance in February:

Golf Course Maintenance

Non-green maintenance work should be underway, including:

  • Bunker renovation or reconstruction
  • Construction of pathways
  • Trimming of overhanging trees
  • Ordering materials for spring maintenance work
  • Machinery maintenance/servicing should be completed by the end of the month
  • Topping of bunkers should be completed

Bowling Green Maintenance

  • Finish off any turf repairs that are outstanding
  • Consider application of turf hardener to reduce the chance of disease
  • Drag brush daily
  • Continue to slit tine the green when conditions are suitable
  • Ensure surrounding areas are clean and tidy before the end of the month as staff will be required for maintenance work in March

Football Pitch Maintenance

  • Brushing /Chain Harrowing should be carried out depending on quality of your facility (only if ground conditions are suitable)
  • Aerate pitch where possible. Only use tractor mounted equipment when conditions are suitable. If conditions are not suitable then use handheld equipment for goalmouth and centre circle areas
  • Apply a suitable sand to goalmouth and centre circle areas to allow a more consistent playable surface
  • High quality pitches may require new turf to be laid, especially in goalmouth areas; this should be deep cut turf that is 150mm thick.
